Build My Church

It may be rainy, it may be cold, but no matter what the weather Catholics in a poor neighborhood in LaPaz, Bolivia, walk to attend Mass on Sunday.  They will find a priest and an altar but they won't find a church.  Before Mass volunteers set up an awning to protect the makeshift altar - a wood table with a cloth over it - and people gather around it.  "Helping to build a chapel in this neighborhood where they have to put up a tent to have Mass would be wonderful," said Msgr. Francis Blood, director of the archdiocese's Mission Office, which sponsors the Latin America Apostolate.  "We're all called to be missionaries, but some are called to foreign missionaries, or "ad gentes,"  Msgr. Blood said.  If we're going to be a Church that's alive, we need to be missionary "ad gentes."

Here at St. Clare of Assisi School and Parish we are doing our part in raising funds to help build a church in Maria Reina.  We are  collecting funds in a variety of ways including:
  • sales of a CD containing original songs by Bridget McCormick available by order
  • profits from Kids Trivia Night
  • money raised from Mission Bingo
  • money collected in the school classrooms during Lent

We at St. Clare Parish are privileged to have one of our former priests, Fr. Brian Fischer, working in La Paz.  We feel a special call to be "ad gentes" to Fr. Brian and his community.  We hope, through our fundraising efforts, to make this dream of building a church come true for the parish of Maria Reina.
